Friday was cool,
It was mid-afternoon, and I had finished my interviews at a bank. Looking for a place to eat, I stopped at a place called Essen.
It was there, I noticed some old guy who looked like Robert Krulwich from Radiolab. He was approaching the cash register (where I was standing). Instinctively, I stood back, thinking “I gotta take a picture of dis Robert Krulwich look-alike!”
Laughing to myself, I pulled out my iPhone,… but then noticed on my peripheral vision, some well-kempt, educated hipster. Then it hit me,
"Wait… that guy looks like Jad Abumrad… also from Radiolab." Could it be!!??
At this point, the “old guy” had paid, and was headed back to the “hipster” and friends by the exit.
I set down my Reuben sandwich and ran to them. Right before they were to leave, I asked “WAIT… you’re Jad Abumrad… and you’re Robert Krulwich… right?” They said, “Yes.” And I gushed about how big of a fan I am, and if I could have a picture.
They said sure, and the rest was history. Since their friends were out, waiting, in the rain, I decided not to hold them up. I just shook their hands and let ‘em be.
Honestly had a lot of questions about their creative process, and production process. Would also loved to have talk about some of my favorite episodes (e.g. Emergence), but ah well. Great day.
Here’s a photo of us:
For those who don’t know, Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich host a fascinating radio show called Radiolab. It is a show that combines science, philosophy, and seamonkeys; really cool stuff. Please check them out at radiolab.org, and here’s a link to one of my favorite episodes:
